Carlton will this week decide whether injured star Charlie Curnow - who has now played limited game time in two practice matches at the lower level - is ready to make his long-awaited AFL return, two years after last playing a senior game.

The return of Curnow - and potentially McKay who was a late out for the North Melbourne game - would help give some meaning to the game that will go head-to-head with the Tokyo Olympics.

Meantime the AFL is considering how best to place both Sydney and GWS, who remain in Queensland away from NSW’s lockdown.

Sydney’s important clash with Essendon - scheduled for Marvel Stadium on Friday night - will now take place in Queensland on Saturday night, while the Giants are due to play Port Adelaide in another match that could shape the top eight.

Families of the two Sydney teams are quarantining at the Mercure Hotel in Brisbane and will then join the players, where they will either remain in Queensland indefinitely or be moved to Melbourne pending a potential easing of Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions.

High level sources at the AFL say they are a long way off making a decision about where finals - including the grand final - will be played but made it clear that all options remain viable.

As reported on the 6PR rumour file on Monday morning in Perth, the AFL has told the Joondalup resort to keep all bookings reserved from the middle of August until late September.

An AFL source confirmed to The Age that Perth remains one of several contingency plans around the country, if circumstances necessitate that games have to be moved due to COVID-19.
