They took their pictures on the shore, before pushing the shark back to the water's edge as a horrified onlooker shouts: "Are you going to put it back now?"

One group member is seen getting down on their knees to pose with the creature.

A witness said the incident made her feel "sick to her stomach" as the shark "clearly couldn't breath".

Asha Reilly told 9News: "These men yelling at us saying 'get out of the water, there's a shark', and we sort of ran out thinking they were joking.

"They eventually hooked it with a rope - they tied it on its tail - and they just had it on the beach, taking photos.

"They'd beached it and it clearly couldn't breath.

"I felt sick to the stomach and I could see other people were as well. It was just horrible."

Catching and releasing sharks is legal in Australia - but it must be "ethical and humane".

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions advises fishing enthusiasts to "release the shark or ray without landing it and whilst it is in the water " whenever possible, the Mirror reports.
