Woman pecked in eye at caf after trying to share some of her toast with bird

A diner was attacked by a butcherbird inside a cafe after she decided to share her toast with the local wildlife.

Debbie Jones has described the frightening moment she narrowly escaped a serious eye injury as she enjoyed her breakfast at a cafe in Queensland, Australia.

After offering up the toast she tried to finish it but the bird landed a single powerful peck on Ms Jones' eye leaving her in severe pain and needing medical help.

Ms Jones told 9 News : "It just attacked me in the eye.

"I started to run down the road; there was all blood pouring down my face."

Doctors told Ms Jones the bird's beak was millimetres away from causing her serious harm.

"They swished my eye out with saline stuff and an gave me an injection and now I have an eye patch, I'm walking round at work like a pirate," she said.

Despite her traumatic experience Ms Jones said she would still feed the birds again but will be more careful.

She also joked she would play the lottery daily in a bid to cash in on her good luck as she had escaped a serious eye injury.

Beth Hall of Birdlife Australia's Gold Coast branch urged people not to feed magpies as swooping season approaches and has urged cafes or restaurants to display signs discouraging diners from feeding birds where appropriate.

She said: "One of the things they do say is that you should wear sunglasses if they're in an attacking or swooping mood and do not look them in the eye."

Last month a dad has been attacked by a monster seagull in Widnes, Cheshire, which left him with bleeding head wounds.

Natalie Stewart, 28, said her father was walking his new puppy when the aerial bombardment took place and he was left with three wounds to his scalp after the attack by the aggressive bird.

She told the Liverpool Echo : "He was walking along with our new puppy and it was on top of the lamp post as it always is, squawking really loudly and then it swooped.

"He ducked down to avoid it and just carried on walking and then the next thing he's just felt it smack the back of his head.

"Obviously it had gone up, turned back around and then hit him from behind.

"It's hit him three times. He said he bent down and put his arm up to defend himself and it flew back up on to the lamp post and started screeching again.

"He said it was hurting so he put his hand on his head and there was blood on his hand."
