8 killed as Hurricane Grace hits Mexico Hurricane Grace pummeled Mexico with torrential rain on Saturday, causing severe flooding and mudslides that killed at least eight people after becoming one of the most powerful storms in years to hit the country’s Gulf coast.
The state government said eight people were killed, including six from a single family. All but one of the victims died in Xalapa, the state capital, including a young girl killed by a mudslide that hit her home, the government said.
Grace smashed windows, downed trees, power cables and telegraph poles, leaving debris strewn around Tecolutla, though there were no human casualties, local authorities said.
Hours before nearing shore on Friday, Grace caused strong winds, high waves and rain in the Veracruz communities of Tuxpan, Poza Rica, Xalapa and Veracruz city as well as in coastal towns in the states of Tabasco and Tamaulipas, Mexico’s meteorological agency said.
Fishermen pulled their boats out of the water and carried them inside harbors to prevent damage as the storm’s leading edge whipped at the coast. Merchants boarded up the windows of their businesses to protect them.
Meanwhile, in Tennessee in the US, heavy rainfall prompted water rescues, road closures, and communications disruptions, leaving 10 dead and dozens reported missing.
Parts of Hickman County received more than 11.6 inches (29 cm) of rain, according to newspaper The Tennessean, and flash flood warnings were in effect for parts of Dickson, Houston and Montgomery, and Stewart counties on Saturday evening.
